Savannah State REU: Week Four

After a full week of  science research for the Savannah State REU Program, I was more than ready for a relaxing weekend. I visited Savannah’s River Street, Forsyth Park in the historic district, and the UGA bamboo farm and coastal gardens. I had such a blast; it was seriously an awesome two days!

I spent my week in the lab looking at grass shrimp and running tests. The work is super interesting, and even though the hours can be long, I really enjoy it. I’m looking at the interaction between grass shrimp, oil dispersants, and crude oil, which is pretty cool! Below are some pictures of the gorgeous Savannah State University campus.

On Saturday, I worked in the lab until the afternoon, and then some of the REU girls (Taryn, Laura, and Sequoia) and I went to Forsyth Park, a ten acre public park in the historic district of Savannah. We wandered around the park and the surrounding neighborhood, where there were a ton of beautiful, old houses.

While at the park we also saw them filming a commercial for Savannah! A statue man “come to life” and led a huge congo line of Girl Scouts and Savannah natives around a beautiful fountain in the park. It was wild, and super cute! We also saw a man on “stilts” that allowed him to jump super high; it was crazy cool!

After wandering around the park, we headed downtown by River Street for dinner and some fun. We went to the City Market, a sweet area with shops and food, and ate at Tapas by Anna. I got baked ziti, which was tasty nothing special. Afterwards, we wandered around downtown, visited a few shops, saw some live music, people watched, and went to Leopold’s Ice Cream, where I got “Dutch Utopia” (chocolate with dark chocolate chips and orange truffles). Oh goodness, was it yummy!

Sunday, Laura, Taryn, and I headed to the UGA Bamboo Farm and Coastal Garden, about thirty minutes away. We went at noon so it was super duper hot, but I had so much fun! There were beautiful flowers, a lake, a blackberry patch (oh goodness, were they tasty!), a banana patch, and tons and tons of bamboo. I seriously had such a blast, and it was completely free!

After our trip to the garden, we were all in the mood for something cold, so we went back to River Street to wander the shops and go to the Savannah Candy Kitchen, where we got some amazing gelato. I had caramelized sugar and mascarpone (Italian sweet cheese), and it was darn good!
